Why 'Normal' Can Feel So Wrong
You're not crazy for feeling sick while your labs look 'fine.' Here's why this happens—and why it's not your fault.
- Reference ranges come from testing thousands of people—many of whom were already unwell or worried enough to get labs drawn
- Labs throw out the top 2.5% and bottom 2.5%, then call the middle 'normal' (Solberg, Clin Chem 1987)
- This means 5% of perfectly healthy people will always be flagged 'abnormal'—and many sick people will test 'normal'
